Am I Ready to be Ninoy?

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

When I got this Php100 stored value Metro Rail Transit (MRT) ticket a few weeks ago, I was reminded of the “I Am Ninoy” campaign I saw in a TVC late August in commemoration of Benigno ‘Ninoy’ Aquino Jr.’s 25th death anniversary. The campaign was meant to remind the Filipinos in general, especially the youth, of Ninoy’s sacrifice and heroism 25 years ago. It embodies “the selfless giving of the best of ourselves…and the advancement of the country as a whole,” according to IAmNinoy.com.

I barely have memories of his assassination as I was just 5 years old then. But in later years, history books and traditional media was enough to acquaint me with the historical event.

I almost bought a white shirt from Bench the other day with the statement “I Am Ninoy.” I thought it was ‘cool.’ And it seems to be ‘in‘ nowadays. The shirt fitted well too. But I had too many white shirts already so I changed my mind.

Thinking deeper, I asked myself how much would I really mean wearing an “I Am Ninoy?” Am I ready to be a Ninoy? Am I ready to render a selfless act or service for the sake of my country when called for?

I’m planning to get one of those yellow Bench ‘I Am Ninoy’ shirts. I think wearing those shirts doesn’t really mean saying you’re willing to be a martyr like Ninoy. It could just be your contribution to keeping his legacy alive. :)

Your right about the legacy thing Eder, I just tried raising the idea a notch higher. =) It's also a fund raiser effort by the Benigno S Aquino Foundation (BSAF) hence the shirts in Bench & Penshoppe.

I think the yellow-ness is too bright =) so I settled with the white. =)

Congrats! First commentor. woot!

i think, it’s not having all the stuffs that says “pinoy ako” or ” i am ninoy”. what really and trully matter is that in our hearts, mind, action, and words we know how to be a true blooded pinoy.. and ninoy..
